Millions More to Receive £150 Energy Bill Discount

Millions more households across Britain are set to receive a £150 discount on their energy bills this winter, as the government expands the eligibility criteria for the Warm Home Discount scheme. This significant change will see the payment automatically applied to the bills of anyone on means-tested benefits, regardless of their property’s size or energy efficiency.

Warm Home Discount Expanded

The government has announced a major expansion of the Warm Home Discount scheme, doubling the number of households eligible for a £150 reduction on their energy bills this winter. Previously, eligibility was restricted to those on specific benefits living in homes with a high energy score. This property-based qualification has now been scrapped.

  • Increased Reach: An additional 2.7 million homes, including nearly a million households with children, will now qualify for the discount.
  • Automatic Application: The £150 will be automatically deducted from the energy bills of all individuals receiving means-tested benefits.
  • Funding Mechanism: Energy companies will fund and distribute the discount. While there’s a possibility this cost could be passed on through a slight increase in the standing charge for all customers, the government states any rise will be offset by savings from reduced energy company expenditure and improved debt management.

Industry and Charity Reactions

The expansion has been largely welcomed by debt charities and energy groups, though some express concerns that the scheme still overlooks certain vulnerable groups, such as those on non-means-tested benefits.

Simon Francis from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition highlighted ongoing challenges, stating, "With bills still hundreds of pounds higher than in 2020, millions will continue to face unaffordable energy and cold, damp homes this winter."

Dhara Vyas, Chief Executive of Energy UK, representing energy suppliers, welcomed the announcement and called for further targeted support schemes.

Broader Context of Energy Support

This expansion follows the government’s recent decision to reinstate the Winter Fuel Payment for most pensioners. The broader commitment to tackling energy costs is also evident in Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ confirmation of £13.2 billion for the Warm Homes Plan, aimed at improving home energy efficiency and reducing heating costs.

Despite recent reductions in household bills due to the energy price cap and lower standing charges, market forecasts suggest a potential rise in gas and electricity bills from October, driven by increasing oil and gas prices.
